Another metamorphic rock, slate is the result of intense pressure which has bonded together layers of fine particles such as clay and sedimentary limestone shales. This layered structure means that it is quite good at being split along one plane and repelling moisture which makes it ideal for use for outdoor applications.
Being composed of quite soft constituent parts; slate can scratch and chip but is still suitable for tilling walls and floors, window sills and bathroom vanity tops etc.
