Most marbles were formed in the same way that limestone formed but with the added influences of intense pressure and heat causing crystallisation of the calcium carbonate. It is therefore known as a metamorphic limestone. Impurities that were around at the time give marble it’s various colours and attractive veining.
This metamorphosis produced a type of stone which is hard enough to have an enduring polish applied and can also be formed into much thinner sections than limestone.
Marble has a long list of applications from cheese boards and fireplaces to flooring and bathroom vanity tops.
