This type of stone is a sedimentary rock formed in the old oceans of the world. The sediments consist of calcium rich shell and bone deposits from sea creatures that have sunk to the bottom of the oceans over many millions of years and then been compressed along with the carbon dioxide in the water to become calcium carbonate. This is why limestone frequently contains fossils. Pure limestone is white in colour but other shades are available due to chemical impurities that were around at the time it was being formed within the outer reaches of the Earth’s crust.
Limestone is softer and more easily worked than other stones and so has been used throughout history to form some of the great historic buildings in the world. As stone masons, we often manufacture limestone fireplace surrounds where its mellow tones help create a relaxed ambience.
